A Month without a Computer?

1 month. 4 weeks. 30 days. 720 hours. 43,200 minutes. Do you think that you would be able to not use a computer for a whole month? I definitely don't think that I could. I use my computer for so much and I don't know that there are many college students that don't have their own laptops or use a computer on campus. I know that there are some that don't, but the majority do. I bet that if you asked that majority they wouldn't be willing to or even able to give up there laptops or computer time for a whole month.

I have seen the Disconnected documentary before in a class in high school. I thought it was crazy when we watched it then. Technology and social media has come such a long way even since that documentary was made in 2008. That documentary wasn't even made 10 years ago and look at technology now. People use email, social media, texting, instant messaging, snapchat and so many more ways to communicate via technology.

I give the students in the documentary a lot of credit for giving up their computers and any computer time for that long. It was clear to see that this was a struggle for them, especially in the beginning. I believe that it would be hard in the beginning because everyone now days is so consumed in technology and that is how so many people communicate. It is so convenient to just quick jump on the computer or cell phone (which are computers now) and send an email or text. That convenience was taken away from the three students in the documentary and you could tell that it made even the simplest assignments a challenge.

This summer I think that I am going to try and give up my computer for a week or maybe two. I know that during the summer sometimes I will just sit on my computer doing useless stuff. I can see how the world is becoming so absorbed in technology and so disconnected at a personal level. I hope that I will be able to disconnect for a week and then maybe at the end of that week I will realize that I don't need to spend so much wasted time on my computer kind of like the students in the documentary.

  1. I totally agree with you- this summer I am looking into maybe giving up my laptop for a week or two. I think it would give me a better understanding of the time I spend on it compared to the things I could do while not on it.
