Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson |
The review that I read was the Fifty Shades of Grey movie review on the Slant website. The reviewer of the movie had a very pronounce opinion on the movie, like basically every single person that knows anything about the book and movie.
The part that I found most interesting was the author was very focused on female submission. The author was saying how people submit themselves to people that have power (specifically saying females submit themselves to males of power because of the movie, but I believe that it can be the case for either gender). He also pointed out that in the movie Anastasia (Johnson) did have a moment where she did "stand up" for herself, but that within a few scenes she was right back to where she was with giving Christian (Dornan) what he wanted.
I think it is interesting that this isn't just Hollywood making up this concept for a movie that this reality. That both men and women will push their beliefs and feelings aside for someone else.
There are so many mixed messages in the world nowadays. We hear the sayings "stand up for yourself and what you believe in," but then there is so much pressure to please people or there are intimidating and manipulative people in the world that can get others to do what they want them to.
I think there is a lot more to the movie Fifty Shades of Grey than just what people say about it and what critics write in their articles. I'm still not sure I would go see it or read the book personally, but if you do maybe try and figure out the messages and meanings that are below the surface.
I've read all three books and from what I can understand, I think that you're right when you say that she pushes her own self aside for him. I think that Anastasia (Johnson) would have a harder time standing up to Christian (Dornan) because 1) He's pretty controlling and 2) She really cares about him. In a deeper sense I think that most of the time you find others setting aside their feelings for someone they care about and they just want them to be happy.
ReplyDeleteI have never read any of the books nor have I watched the movie. Because, I have really no interest in either. However, I feel like from all the gossip about this series, I have a pretty good understanding of what happens. From what a lot of individuals have mentioned is the movie leaves out important portions of the novel and even adds portions that never happened. It seems as if the movie made the main male character more dominant over the female main character than the book actually entails. Theses are all observations I have been told or read other places. But again, everyone has a different opinion of whats right or wrong in the sense of this movie.
